How to Create A Vision Board in Five Easy Steps
The New Year is upon us and I’m sure we can all agree that it's extremely refreshing. if you’re like the masses you’ve probably already set some goals and have resolved to be great. Me and Tyra are both rooting for you!
Studies show that our brains process data visually and use sensory information like pictures, smells, and songs to retain or recall information. I don’t have many memories post-college but every time I hear Kanye West and T. Pain’s Good Life I remember my first real job, purchasing my first car and renting my first apartment on the Southside of Chicago. In my mind, that song was a visual representation of my 22-year-old self.
Now on to vision boards.
You will need a few supplies: a board, glue, tape, scissors, stickers, and magazines.
For the past few years, my friends and I have created personal vision boards to curate what we wanted out of life in that particular year. Vision boards are powerful because they evoke emotion and can inspire your passion and purpose in life. Vision boards can take you from “I want or I wish…” to “I have or I am…” Most importantly, vision boards are fun to create and can be used as a photographic depiction of your annual goals.
Here is how to create a vision board in five easy steps.
Step 1: ✍🏾
Determine one word that will serve as the guiding principle for your new year.
My word for 2018 is CONSISTENCY. I chose that word for two reasons. The first reason is that the word “CONSISTENCY” reminds me of cake batter and cupcakes are always on my mind. The second reason is that word promotes persistence in endeavors that lead to greatness. All of the legends in any category have one thing in common and that’s CONSISTENCY.
Step 2: ✍🏾
The second step is identifying your goals and aspirations for the year for all facets of your life from personal to professional. As you ponder on what you want to accomplish also visualize what that success will yield. For example, if you have a goal to save a certain amount of money think about what that savings will mean for your life. Is it living debt-free, traveling more, buying a house or car?
Write those ideas down on sticky notes, index cards or even in your phone. 📝
Step 3: ✍🏾
Think back to the previous year. Where there any successes or winning behaviors that you can replicate in the new year? Transformation isn’t easy and neither is developing new patterns. Maybe you established an exercise routine or practiced more intentional gratitude. Reflect on the steps you took to accomplish that goal. Did you wake up earlier to make it to the gym? Were you more mindful of daily happenings and that in turn made you more grateful?
Those tiny shifts in behavior can be the catalyst for greatness. 💆🏾♀️
Step 4: ✍🏾
Now that you have clarity on what you want to gain in 2018 its time to activate the other side of your brain. Use magazines, screenshots, and images from Pinterest to curate a personal collage that will help to manifest your dreams. Look for powerful quotes and pictures that reflect where you want to be by the close of 2018.
Paste those pictures onto a board and decorate it to reflect the new you. One of my goals is to continue to grow my blog and YouTube channel which means I will be adding the ArYouSerious logo to my vision board along with some quantifiable goals. I also have a goal to find the perfect vegan red velvet cupcake recipe.
Step 5: ✍🏾
Display your vision board in a place where you can see it daily. It helps to style your vision board so that it aligns well with the décor of your home. You can place your vision board in your bedroom, closet, bathroom or office. Looking at the vision board every day for a few minutes will set the agenda for your day and guide your intentions in your decision making.
For example, if you have the vision to grow your business; despite your other obligations for the day, your main responsibility should be to sell $100 in products or meet five new potential clients or create stellar content on your blog. Your main focus should be your vision.
Now that you have curated your personal vision board for 2018 its time to conquer the world. 🌍🏃🏿♀️🏃🏿♀️
